London Marathon 2024
Campaign by Leukaemia Care (RCN 1183890, SC039207)
#TeamLC are raising money to help support all those who have been affected by a blood cancer diagnosis, by running 26.2 miles around London on Sunday 21st April 2024.

Story

Leukaemia Care is a national charity dedicated to ensuring that anyone affected by blood cancer receives the right information, advice and support. Around 34,000 people are affected by blood cancer each year in the UK and we're here to support them through their diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

Thank you for visiting my Just Giving page. After nine years of failed attempts to gain entry to the London Marathon, the tenth year was the one! I have decided to run for Leukaemia Care to raise much needed funds for this extremely worthy charity.

Ironically, on Children in Need Day 2022, my son's best friend, Alfie, was admitted to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, with suspected leukaemia. Four days later this diagnosis was confirmed and he started a horrendous rollercoaster journey of treatment.

This is now a cause close to my heart and has opened my eyes to the world of chemotherapy and the side effects and all other complications which come with that. My son Leo has been there throughout the whole treatment phase and has helped keep Alfie's spirits up by visiting Alfie in hospital.

Alfie is now in remission but unfortunately leukaemia requires six- nine months of intensive treatment, before a patient enters the 'maintenance' part of the treatment. Alfie is still currently in the intensive phase but this should come to an end this summer.

Alfie suffered extreme side effects of his chemotherapy and it was touch and go for him around his birthday in January. This made me realise that leukaemia treatment still needs to be improved and developed and that further research and funding is imperative to make this happen.

If you feel able, please sponsor me to run the London Marathon and help improve care for this devastating cancer. In the meantime, I'll get training!
