Story

Welcome to my Just Giving Page
As many people know my grandpa has been suffering with dementia for the best part of a decade now. It is a heartbreaking illness that starts with little memory losses such as forgetting to turn off the cooker, to more devastating deteriorations including forgetting what day it is, what year it is, where you live, how old you are, forgetting familiar names, faces and even struggling to recognise your children or the name of your wife.
Growing up so close with my grandpa I have watched him deteriorate, and too have witnessed the heart breaking toll has taken on so many members of my family as someone we love so dearly loses sense of himself along with the recollection of major parts of his life - his school life, his upbringing, his army days, his working life and friends, his wedding day, the birth of his three children, and then his six grand children. However, most heartbreaking of all, is that it is not just my grandpa fighting this battle, and indeed so many more families are watching their loved ones slip away due to this horrible illness. Alzheimer’s society works tirelessly, not only on providing support and care for our nearest and dearest but also investing time and money into research in the hope of finding a cure to put an end to this suffering.
My grandpa is one of my greatest inspirations and shows me each and every day what’s good in the world. While he faces an illness that threatens his ability to remember and make him lose touch with his life events, he has created a life and become a person that will always be remembered. He has taught me the importance of living within the moment, irrespective of yesterday or tomorrow. It is for this very reason that I will be taking part in the Bath Half Marathon, to celebrate my grandpa's 87th birthday.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance.
