Story
In April 2015 I will be doing a 12 day extreme sponsored trek, cross country skiing approximately 120 miles across the Arctic, accompanying Joe "Malamute Man" Henderson and his formidable team of 22 Alaskan Malamutes on one of their expeditions into the Brooks Range, Alaska. I will be undertaking this expedition as a challenge to raise funds for 3 charities:
- Malamute Matters
- the Royal (Dick) Vet School's Hospital for Small Animals
- the Euan MacDonald Centre for Research into Motor Neurone Disease.
As the owner of two wonderful Alaskan Malamutes myself, and a trustee of Malamute Matters, I believe this is the perfect challenge to raise funds and awareness to help this beautiful breed in the plight it now faces as hundreds of Malamutes are ending up in rescues each year. Malamute Matters is a charity raising funds to help rescue dogs of all breeds, but primarily Malamutes and other Northern breeds, running fundraising appeals and events and an online store where 100% of the profits are donated to dog rescues and emergency one off cases. MM works with numerous rescues across the globe to publicise dogs in need of fostering and adoption.
I owe the Small Animal Hospital of the Royal (Dick) Vet School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh a debt of gratitude for the care and treatment they have provided to my pets over the years. For example, four years ago, they saved the life of my beautiful cat, Shadow, when no one else could diagnose his condition. If it was not for their care and expertise, Shadow would not be here today. This is my way of thanking them for all that they have done for my family, and to show my support of the stellar work that they do.
The third cause I want to support by doing this challenge is the Euan MacDonald Centre for Research into Motor Neurone Disease. In the US, MND is called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The research and work the Euan MacDonald Centre does is groundbreaking and crucial to scientific developments in so many areas, both in terms of human and veterinary medicine.
I joined Joe Henderson and Team Malamute on expedition in April 2014 and was overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown for my first ever Arctic fundraising challenge. I aim to do even better this time around, and with your help, I believe anything is possible!
Please support my challenge and give generously to support these three worthwhile and necessary causes.
Thank you :)
