Story

Ben's Story

Ben has always wanted to go into the Navy and become a Warfare Officer. So with this in mind, he started at the University of Portsmouth back earlier this year in September, studying Business & Management. He settled into uni life pretty quickly, amusing all his siblings with various pictures of his social outfits! He joined sports clubs and played cricket for the University's 1st and 2nd teams. He even joined a dance group and grew an impressive moustache to raise money for Movember. Life for Ben was that of a normal uni student.

Until Saturday 30th November. Ben was suddenly struck down by meningococcal meningitis, and was left fighting for his life. He was within minutes of dying.

Thanks to the response of the incredible doctors and nurses that attended to Ben at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, his life was saved.

But his journey is far from over.

As a result of the meningitis, Ben had a brain injury and suffered a stroke. His left side remains affected and he will be in hospital for months recovering. He has a long road ahead of him but he will get there, only thanks to the whole team that will help his recovery. Ben for now remains in the Intensive Care Unit. He has has nurses and doctors and physios looking after him around the clock. There are so many people involved in his care and as his family, we couldn't be more grateful. Ben couldn't be more grateful.

In order for intensive care units. and neuro rehab units to treat patients like Ben, they need so many things that would aid recovery. NHS resources are so limited so we want to raise money for the Portsmouth Hospitals Charity, so that those in need really get the help they deserve.

If you can only give a penny, or a pound, please give. Everything helps, and it all goes to an amazing cause that helps our son and brother. We owe everything to Queen Alexandra Hospital for bring Ben back to us and we want to give back to those that helped us. Whatever you can give, please give. It is hugely appreciated.
