Empowering Education and Community Resilience in Remote Pakistan Villages

The Juniper Trust is raising money for The Juniper Trust

Fundraising for Askole School, Baltistan · 31 July 2019

The Juniper Trust began supporting small, sustainable projects in Nepal over 30 years ago, focusing on helping the poorest communities—especially children. Proudly volunteer-run, the Juniper Trust keeps costs to a minimum, with 98% of funds raised going directly to our projects.

Story

Ascole School in the Karakoram Mountains and Shadri, Thingee, and Asumbar Schools in the Ishkoman Valley are among the most remote educational facilities in Pakistan's mountainous regions. Despite their geographical separation, these schools serve communities facing significant challenges due to their isolation amidst the rugged landscapes of the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges.

Askole, nestled in the Karakoram Mountains, serves as the gateway to the Baltoro Glacier and the renowned trail to Concordia and K2. Despite its role as a hub for trekkers and climbers heading to some of the world's highest peaks like K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrums, the community sees little benefit.

With only 5 classrooms accommodating 300 students, Askole School urgently requires additional resources to ensure quality education. We are currently supporting the full-time salaries of two female teachers who were previously volunteers, ensuring that the neediest children have continued access to education. We are also supporting Early Childhood Development (ECD) materials for feeder schools that contribute to Askole School.

The Juniper Trust has remained committed to supporting Askole's community and children by providing classroom insulation before winter and essential food supplies during the Covid-19 crisis.

In the Ishkoman Valley, Shadri School stands as a beacon of hope. Built in 2013 by the The Juniper Trust, the school serves boys and girls from the village and surrounding areas. Every year, JT volunteer Ayub Khan visits the school to deliver new uniforms, school equipment, and salary for the single teacher at the school.

In the heart of this remote region, another beacon of hope has emerged – the Thingee Community School. Initiated by Juniper Trust volunteer Ayub Khan and supported by the Ayub Hamdard Foundation (AHF), this school aims to address the educational needs of the Ghujar tribes, historically neglected with high dropout rates.

In 2024, we made significant contributions to Thingee Community School, covering the salaries of 2 teachers and providing student and office furniture, an LED kit, a computer with table, uniforms, stationery, internet device with fees, books, and the purchase of two stoves essential for heating during harsh winters.

Your support, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the lives of these children. With the dedication of our volunteers, even modest donations can achieve a lot. Whether you've explored the Karakoram Mountains, are planning a visit, or simply want to assist children in these challenging communities, your donation will directly impact this project. Please consider donating to support education and empowerment in these remote regions.
