Story

Stu Morton, from Cramlington, will begin the almost 4500 mile three-month journey in December 2019 after a gruelling 12 months of training and preparation, in a bid to set two world records.

Ex-Royal Marine Commando Stu, 36, has saved up over £60,000 to fund the challenge, which aims to make him the first person to row solo from Portugal to the USA. His Atlantic Row will raise funds for Rock 2 Recovery via the Royal Marines Charity, supporting ex-forces personnel affected by PTSD.

Stu is also hoping to secure two world titles: fastest solo row from mainland Europe to mainland North America; and first ever solo row too!

Stu will row for up to 18 hours each day;
He will burn up to 10,000 calories every day;
He will survive on freeze dried food;
His training regime includes ultra marathon running, rowing, weightlifting, crossfit and lots and lots of stretching and sports massaging;
His girlfriend has written a series of letters to be opened by Stu on specific days during his Atlantic Row;
Stu says that, as well as his friends and family, he will miss walks with his dog Tilly and Sunday Roasts the most.

Stu said: “The reason I’m doing the Atlantic Row is to dispel the myth that some former service personnel who suffer with mental health issues may be broken or mentally weak just because we have been through incredibly high pressured environments when at war and on operations.

“I have had my own mental health issues in the past and I want to show that it is still possible to achieve extraordinary things. This will hopefully help to dispel the stigma attached to mental health and also inspire others who may be struggling themselves.”

David Harrison, Managing Partner of sponsor True Potential Investor, added: “This is an amazing feat of human endurance that Stu is undertaking. I know how hard he has worked and the personal challenges he has overcome to get this far. It’s that same grit and determination that will see him cross the Atlantic. He’s raising money for a fantastic cause and we are very pleased to be supporting him.”
