Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit the JustGiving page of BDO Stoy Hayward in Scotland.

We took part in the inaugural Scottish Byte Night sleep-out in 2008, as part of the national Byte Night event.  Last year, we were recruited with just over a month to go before the sleep out took place and in fact did all of our fundraising in a very short period during September 2008, raising over £5,000 for Action for Children.  This year we have set ourselves an ambitious target of £7,500 to reach!!

What is it all about?

Byte Night (http://www.bytenight.org.uk/), is an annual event that has taken place for the last eleven years at other locations around the UK.  It is primarily an IT and business focused event and as you can see from the website there are a fair number of IT companies taking part along with a number of other organisations.  It involves sleeping out for a night to raise money in support of children who for various reasons find themselves homeless and living on the streets.  Seeing what the charity are involved with and then taking part in the actual sleep out itself does underline what a really difficult and precarious situation homelessness is to be in.  Spending one night without the comforts of home, that we can all take for granted, is nothing compared to what some children have to go through every night on the street.  Byte Night is exclusively one of the main fundraising vehicles for the charity Action for Children and assists the charity in their work with these vulnerable children (please see http://www.actionforchildren.org.uk/).

What happens at the Byte Night event?

Each event around the UK is much the same with regard to approach and content, the main differentials are probably the locations of the get together and then the actual sleep out itself.  At the inaugural event in Scotland in 2008, we were extremely fortunate to have strong backing from some MSP's and in particular Frank McAveety MSP, who also took part in the sleep out.  Through their assistance, we are able to meet and link up with our fellow sleepers at the Scottish Parliament prior to the actual sleep out itself, including speeches and presentations about the charity and its work.  This is great for getting to know our fellow sleepers better.  Then we move across to another excellent venue in Holyrood Park for the sleep out - you can see pictures of our team from the 2008 event on this page - again the sleepers have the chance to mingle and join in for some other activities before sleeping out, in a crisp, cool and (hopefully) dry Edinburgh night.
