A little bit about myself

I am a Beanstalk volunteer since January 2016 and I can say, with all my heart, that it changed not only the life of a child but also mine.

My biggest fans are my two boys, 8 and 6 years old, and I strongly believe that teaching kids compassion and empathy will make them happier adults.

A little bit about Beanstalk

Beanstalk is a national charity that gives one-to-one literacy support to disadvantaged children aged between 6 and 11. They aim to achieve this by working with primary schools to provide high quality literacy support through trained volunteer reading helpers who dedicate their time to give children a brighter future.

Tens of thousands of children leave primary school each year unable to read and write properly. Many of these children never catch up and struggle through secondary school. They are four times more likely to truant and five times more likely to be excluded from school.

60,000 children in England left primary school in July 2015 unable to read and write properly.

Around 8 million adults in the UK are illiterate.

Instilling good literacy skills and an early enjoyment of reading in children strengthens self-esteem and provides a sense of inclusion in society, as well as improving understanding, happiness and success in adult life.
