Story

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) describes brain damage and dysfunction that occurs when the brain doesn’t receive enough oxygen. When this happens during birth, newborns face severe immediate consequences and require extensive medical intervention. The brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation leads to seizures in the newborn, and later in life epilepsy.

My name is Devika Dahiya, and I am a medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I am conducting a research project at the Brain Inflammation Group Ireland that investigates the inflammation that occurs in the newborn brain following oxygen deprivation.  Along side my research Dr Jennifer Dowling (PI at BIGie) and I are very passionate about raising awareness  surrounding newborn HIE and to raise funds for Epilepsy Ireland.

The Brain Inflammation Group in Ireland works in collaboration with FutureNeuro and the McCoy Lab at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
