Event: Brewin Dolphin SW Charity of the Year
We give children a week on working farms to raise self esteem and confidence.

Story

The Brewin Dolphin offices in the South West (Exeter, Plymouth and Truro) select a local Charity to support every year.  This year we have selected Farms for City Children.

Children’s author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare founded Farms for City Children at Nethercott House in Devon in 1976 and since then have opened two more farms: Wick Court in Gloucestershire and Lower Treginnis in Pembrokeshire.

The charity offers urban children from all over the country a unique opportunity to live and work together for a week at a time on a real farm in the heart of the countryside. It is an intense, ‘learning through doing’ experience of a different life – for children who may not know where their food comes from and have limited opportunities to explore the outside world.

Unfortunately we are living through extraordinary times. In a matter of a few short weeks, our charity partner has had to close their farms, indefinitely halting all school visits. With the farms empty of children and many sources of income vanishing overnight, Farms for City Children need our support more than ever, so that they are here and ready to welcome busloads of children as soon as the Government restrictions are lifted.

We will take part in various challenges to raise as much as we can.

The money we raise will be spent ensuring Farms for City Children can maintain their land and heritage buildings, retain key staff and feed and care for livestock, until the children return.

Help us to protect the future of this wonderful charity by donating whatever you can. Every donation will mean so much.

And keep checking this page to hear updates from Farms for City Children and find out about our plans to raise as much as possible.

About the charity

Founded in 1976 by children's writer Michael Morpurgo and wife Clare. A weeks stay on one of our working farms aims to develop potential, build self-esteem and enrich the lives of 3,200 children from inner cities, and towns annually. Many are disadvantaged and some have special educational needs.
