Story

BREAKING THE CYCLE- 1000 kilometres in six days through France and Spain for ABF- the Soldiers’ Charity

During World War One the Prison Service was a reserved occupation. But prison staff of all ranks volunteered to serve under arms and their sacrifice is commemorated in every gaol across the country. Throughout the intervening years an affinity has been felt between the armed forces and the Prison Service.

A century later, to mark the 100 anniversary of the Great War, a group of senior Prison Service leaders will honour that affinity by undertaking the challenge of a lifetime on behalf of the Army Benevolent  Fund- The Soldiers’ Charity. Running prisons takes resilience, stamina and determination and the Four will need these in full measure to meet their target of cycling from Portsmouth to Northern Spain in one week.

The Prison Governors, whose credits include Parkhurst, Dartmoor, Pentonville, Whitemoor and Belmarsh prisons, are fund-raising for ABF- The Soldiers’ Charity, because of the wide-ranging and enduring support offered to serving and former soldiers and their families. “ABF works for soldiers long after soldiers stop serving. There are so many excellent groups helping soldiers and their loved ones through difficult times. But for us, the Army Benevolent Fund is the glue that holds these together. Between us- through direct giving, sponsorship and gift aid- we hope to raise enough money to make a real difference to someone who needs it most.”

The four Governors are aiming to raise at least £10,000 for ABF- The Soldiers’ Charity. “This is an ambitious target for a small group but we are confident it will focus us and keep us going when the ride gets tough. Every penny will be used to support the UK’s Army family, the ABF. Please help us to do this.”
