Doing it for Daniel · 30 November 2020
Daniel Caplan, a Sixth Year pupil at Hutchesons’ Grammar School, and a friend to several of our own pupils, has, very sadly, has been diagnosed with a type of brain tumour known as DMG (diffuse midline glioma, grade 4).
Tragically, there are no known treatments for this type of tumour. It is impossible for many of us to imagine the challenges that Daniel and his family are facing at this terrible time, but they have responded with amazing courage and established a fundraising target with the charity, Funding Neuro.
Funding Neuro is a Glasgow based neurological research charity, currently focusing on MND, DIPG and Glioblastoma. It is the charity that the former Scottish rugby internationalist and MND sufferer, Doddy Weir, has supported in recent times. They are hoping to begin a clinical trial later this year to treat 18 children with Daniel’s type of tumour using microcatheters to deliver chemotherapy directly into the affected area.
This trial and other potential treatments gives hope to Daniel, and to many others who are suffering of the same tumour type. The story of Daniel has also gone nationwide, recently being raised in parliament with the Prime Minister thanks to Daniel’s mother organising a petition for more research in this field, while Hutchie and St. Aloysius have both held fundraising events. With such awareness being created, we all hope that future investment into this area will bring better outcomes for children suffering with DIPG.
