We help break the cycle of poverty to transform the lives of children

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. The team here at Barclays have 'volunteered' to compete in Hellrunner.

Hellrunner is described below:

'The PUMA HellRunner™ is over multi-terrain and varying underfoot conditions. There will be everything from running tracks and trails to water-filled areas and plenty of steep hills. Expect to get very wet! It will be nature at its toughest. The course will be marked but do not expect to see mile or kilometre markers….that’s for those softy road running types. All you need to know is that the course will be probably more than 10 and less than 12 miles in length. Hey! With what we have in store, who’s counting?'

The reason so many have volunteered is to raise money for David at New Hope Orphanage. David and his family were caught in the infamous church fire during the riots in Kenya in 2007. David and his mother Monica were the only survivors from their family. We recently received this update:

"It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Monica died on Thursday night. She had TB and Meningitis - her chest and lungs had been badly damaged by the fire that killed her husband and other children. She will be buried at Muranga, her home town, on 20th July.

As for David, Anne had this to say  "He has coped very well, we thank God. We are supposed to return him for another surgery, on Wednesday the 14th. We shall talk to the doctor to postpone, until after the burial".

We had raised £8000, so far, towards medical bills and to buy a plot of land and build a new home. £900 is needed immediately to pay Monica's hospital bills and funeral expenses and for David's next operation.  But as for David and the rest of the money this was her response.

"We intend to stay with David here, and when he becomes an adult we settle him somewhere. Actually, Monica told many people ( before she died ) that David should be taken care of by . I discussed with Tiras this morning, and felt that buying a piece of land for him will be best, and eventually building him a house. This morning, David came to me upstairs, and told me he wants to start school at Kibagare Pri School-----where most of our kids are".

We will continue with fund-raising for David and try and make his life a little more comfortable and his future a little more secure." "
