Thank you for visiting my page.
My sister, Thangam Debbonaire, was diagnosed with breast cancer only a few weeks after being elected to parliament in 2015. Her first year as a Bristol MP was therefore not as she'd expected or hoped as she had to balance cancer treatment with representing and supporting her constituents.
She was mostly in the constituency in Bristol, working hard to represent her constituents' concerns and help solve their problems wherever possible. Her time in Westminster was limited but she made it there whenever she could. There's a system in parliament that allows for this kind of emergency so that votes are not affected, and although she was unable to take part in many debates, she was active through social media, took the opportunity to ensure that she was thoroughly versed and immersed in the conventions and rules of Parliament, and kept herself well read in what was happening.
All whilst she was undergoing treatment.
Macmillan Cancer Support were invaluable, to her, and to us as her family, in giving us practical, honest and thoughtful advice and information throughout the time. When she said that she wanted to give something back to them through the Macmarathon, I knew I had to help support her any way I could. It is great to be able to combine one of the things I love doing with raising money for a thoroughly worthwhile charity.
Having lived on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland AONB, the Peak District and the Cotswolds, walking is something I love. I am gradually walking the Isle of Wight coastal path, the South West Coastal Path, and five years ago walked Hadrian's Wall, just because it's there. I am really looking forward to exploring a coast that is new to me, walking with my family, supporting my sister, who is surviving and thriving post-cancer treatment.
