Running a marathon is one of the most difficult sport achievement one can get, because it isn't only long, it's damn  l o o o n g. Running for more than 42km is an extraordinary effort, both physical and psychological. However this number pales in comparison to the overall distance that one runs during the preparation: more than 1000km with a 12 months training. No surprises then if, for most of the people, what really matters is not winning the race, but actually getting to the finish line.

Similarly, I have no interest in winning the race, but at the same time I feel like I do not deserve all this amount of fatigue and training. I would feel much better if I could see all of my efforts producing some real benefit to the World. 

This is why I have decided to run my first Marathon for a charity. All of the energy that I will put into this race, every single step that I am taking in my training, will contribute to make the World we live in a little bit better.

How much better depends on you, and on your generosity.

 

All of the donations will be given to VSO to fund an Educational program in a developing Country. I think that the best way to achieve long lasting improvements is to give the local populations the tools to make things by themselves. And, as a scientist, I firmly believe that the way to start and maintain this process is through Education.

 £1,500 can allow a VSO nurse in Sierra Leone to create a nursing education course and train 10 nurse educators per week;

 £1,500 can enable a VSO teacher to secure a year's funding for a girl's education enrolment and retention project in Northern Ghana. The project aims to give the half a million Ghanaian girls that are not in school, the opportunity to have a quality education.

Correre una maratona e' una delle attività fisiche piu' intense che il nostro corpo possa sostenere, non soltanto perche' e' lunga, ma perche' e' maledettamente lunga! Correre per piu di 42km e' uno sforzo incredibile, sia per il fisico che per la mente. Tuttavia questa distanza e' nulla se confrontata con quella che si corre durante l'allenamento: più di 1000km in 12 mesi. Non c'e' da meravigliarsi allora se alla maggior parte delle persone non importa tanto vincere la gara, quanto riuscire ad arrivare al traguardo.

Anche io ovviamente non aspiro alla vittoria della gara, ma al tempo stesso non sento di meritare tutta questa fatica. Mi sentirei molto meglio se potessi vedere tutti i miei sforzi indirizzati a produrre qualche reale miglioramento per il nostro Mondo.

Per questo motivo ho deciso di correre la mia prima maratona per beneficenza. Tutta l'energia che mettero' in questa corsa, ogni singolo passo che faro durante il mio allenamento, contribuira' a rendere il Mondo in cui tutti viviamo, un pochino migliore. Quanto migliore dipendera' da voi, e dalla vostra generosita'.

 

Tutte le donazioni saranno devolute all'organizzazione VSO, per finanziare un programma educativo in una nazione in via di sviluppo. Io credo che il modo migliore per ottenere dei miglioramenti a lungo termine sia di dare alle popolazioni locali gli strumenti per operare da se stessi. E, in quanto scienziato, sono fermamente convinto che il modo per iniziare e mantenere questo processo sia attraverso l'istruzione.

£1,500 permettono ad un insegnante VSO di garantire un intero anno di fondi per la formazione di una giovane ragazza nel Ghana del Nord. Il progetto punta a fornire al milione e mezzo di ragazze ghanesi che non vanno a scuola, l'opportunita' di avere una formazione di buon livello.

同样，对于赢得比赛我丝毫不感兴趣。在我看来，如果单单是为了比赛丝毫不值得我花费这么多的时间和金钱用于训练。如果我的努力能够为这个世界做出一点点的贡献，才是更为值得、更让我觉得高兴的。
   所以，我决定为了慈善而开始我人生中的第一次马拉松比赛。在训练中，我所投入的每一滴汗水，我所迈出的每一步，都将献给我们的世界，以使它变的更加美好。
 力量因人而异。

 此次所有的捐款都将用于VSO针对发展中国家所开展的教育项目。

 授人以鱼不如授人以渔。在我看来，如果能够给当地居民以”工具“，让他们自助，才是最有效、最持久的帮助。同时，作为一名科学家，我坚信教育才是开展这类帮助的最好方式。
