Story

Hi! Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For 8 weeks over July and August this year I will be taking time out of my PhD to teach Maths at a school in Alexandra, South Africa, through the Warwick in Africa programme. The Alexandra township is one of the poorest and most densely populated urban areas in the world, leading to high levels of crime, substance abuse and violence. Children growing up in this area experience unimaginable hardships on a daily basis and yet, for many, their passion to learn and create a better life for themselves endures. I strongly believe that education is our greatest tool when it comes to liberating the impoverished, so I am both incredibly excited and a little nervous to experience the reality of delivering on this belief.

What is Warwick in Africa?

Warwick in Africa is a volunteer programme that aims to help learners and teachers across some of the most underdeveloped areas in South Africa, Ghana and Tanzania. Each year, volunteers from Warwick University are sent to one of 28 partner schools to teach English and Maths, alongside training events that are held to further develop the skills of local teachers, allowing the effect of the programme to be felt long after the volunteers return home. In 2018 alone, 15,036 learners and 717 teachers benefited from the Warwick in Africa programme, with student test results increasing by an average of 20% and class attendance by 50%.

How can you help?

In order to take part in this programme, and to ensure its continued impact in years to come, I need your help to meet a personal fundraising target of £1000Any donations, however small or large, would be hugely appreciated and never forgotten. To give a little perspective, a £10 donation would cover the cost of teaching a child through this programme for a whole month. Just think, for less than the price of going out for a meal or to the movies, you could have a significant, lasting effect on a child's life.

Thank you so much for your support and helping to make a difference for those less fortunate than ourselves.

'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world' Nelson Mandela, past resident of Alexandra
