Children of the Mekong works with local communities to improve access and quality of education in Southeast Asia through child sponsorship programmes and development projects. We are the UK branch of a leading French organisation founded in 1958.

Story

What’s The Challenge?

Join us as we encourage our friends, families and followers to walk 1 Million Steps on the 19th of March to fundraise for Children of the Mekong!

To inspire our supporters, we will each be walking the ultra-marathon distance of 100km in 24 hours around Hoi An. This is equivalent to around 120,000 steps in one day!

Who We Are?

Noah Goalen and Ben Pyser are two London-based graduates backpacking around South East Asia for 4 months hoping to make a positive impact along the way.

Why Children Of The Mekong?

According to UNICEF, more than 50% of children live in learning poverty in South Asia (unable to read and understand a simple text by age 10). With 12.5 million children at the primary level and 16.5 million children at the lower secondary level being out-of-school.

Children of the Mekong was established in 1958 to break the circle of poverty. In 2022, more than 23,000 sponsored children and 60,000 supported children were able to access education, build their lives and find employment across South East Asia.

We also hope to volunteer in one of the charity’s educational facilities during our trip to provide first-hand support to the children.

How Can You Get Involved?

We understand this fundraiser falls on Mother’s Day (in case you forgot!) and we thought it would be a great opportunity to encourage you to go on a family walk whilst making a real difference to the lives of impoverished children!

Feel free to walk over 100,000 steps with us. But if you don’t fancy 24 hours of walking - anything is appreciated 🤩

To reach our 1 Million Step Goal, all it would take is 80 of our supporters to walk 10,000 steps on the 19th of March and send us a screenshot of your health app to accurately tally it all up!

1 million steps and £1000 is the goal - but let’s see how many steps we can walk and how much we can fundraise to help the education of children in South East Asia.

To support this initiative, please post on your Instagram story a screenshot of  your steps and tag: the_phuket_list

If you don’t have Instagram, don’t worry! You can also send us your health app screenshot privately:

I’m In Hoi An - Can I Join?!

YES, to make sure we don’t Hanoi each other too much on this walk, we would love to have as many people joining us for part/all of the walk!!
