Story
The total is now in - see above - and to finally sign off an account below of the best bits:
From Bettyhill to Bonar Bridge; From Torrisdale Bay, a beautiful loch and moorland run in mainly bright, though cool weather, on well-surfaced and very quiet roads, it was here that I saw a group of cyclists finishing LEJOG, but they were supported (i.e. they weren’t carrying their own luggage). There was a steady climb from Altnaharra but by Lairg this led to a fast descent into BB where the weather was beautiful for the first time.
Climbing and descending the Shap summit; a real beauty. Shap is an escarpment, steeper on the south side than the north so for me an easy, steady climb up to the top (about 425m) before shooting down into Kendal. I had the bike up to 48.9mph on the descent.
Cycling into Moniaive from the west; this might have felt good partly because the evening before I’d had a discouraging run through a boring, shitkicker’s landscape, all dispiriting descents followed by tedious ascents in a ubiquitous farmed landscape. But this road was quiet and had a long flattish run by rivers and lochs before climbing slowly into a forested, moorland landscape, passing the Southern Upland Way. Then a fast descent into Moniaive for coffee and chocolate.
Cycling across Wenlock Edge; another merciful departure from a busy road, a good section on the flat before some hilly climbing in the Shropshire Hills. And a fast and uninterrupted blast into Ludlow.
Dartmoor; I knew this was going to be a bugger of a climb (or climbs) but was keen to do it and sitting having a late lunch in Exeter on a balmy sunny afternoon was the perfect time. There were two or three killing hills but the scenery in the late afternoon heat haze was fantastic, had a great meal in Tavistock to finish the day off.
The pub meal in Penzance after arriving at Land’s End; just before arriving at Land’s End I passed a couple coming the other way on a tandem. We exchanged the normal greetings, the stoker (the person on the back seat – and as usual the stoker was a woman, when tandems are ridden by a man and a woman you never see the woman as the pilot) gave me a broad grin and a thumbs up. I guessed they’d just completed JOGLE and thought no more about it. Having arrived at LE I had a pint but there was little more to do so cycled back to Penzance and found a B&B there. Later I went out for a pub meal and found myself sitting at the table next to the tandem couple, not only that but they were from Snape, near Bedale, little more than ten miles from Scorton. We had a great chat about our respective journeys. To talk it through with others who had completed the trip was a good way to finish the ride.
Phew!
