We give breast cancer survivors a chance to finish a triathlon through team spirit.

Story

In December 2018, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was shocked and scared but so pleased that I had gone to the GP when I noticed a dent in my left breast. You always think of lumps when you think of breast cancer but following my experience, I would always advise going to a GP if you notice anything different in your breasts.

I was ‘lucky’, because it had been caught early the prognosis was good. A lumpectomy and a course of radiotherapy later, I was given the all clear! I am still on medication to help prevent a reoccurrence and will be for at least another two years. Six months later I was back at work but wondering why I felt so low and sad and dealing with the side effects of the medication. Surely I should be back to normal by now.

Enter Team Phoenix Foundation. A charity that aims to support women affected by cancer to rise from the ashes by supporting their mind, body and soul. This is achieved by taking a group of women each year and training them to complete the Hever Castle Triathlon. The triathlon distance that the Team Phoenix Foundation take part in is a: -

400m Swim

20k Cycle

4k Run (or very fast walk in my case)

This year’s triathlon is on 25 September and approaching quickly.

I am fortunate to be a member of this year’s team of 10 women. By attending training sessions supported by wonderful coaches and previous years’ Firebirds, we are encouraged to get fitter and stronger both physically and mentally. Even more important are the bonds and friendships that are developing in the group. We train together, socialise together and will complete the triathlon together. We will finish together, all 10 of us, hand in hand.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to a Macmillan Group where I met a fellow Firebird, Lauren. She was a member of the 2019 Team Phoenix Firebirds. She inspired and encouraged me to apply to be a part of the 2020 Team. This was delayed due to Covid but I am so happy to be part of this year’s team. I would like to do my bit to support and encourage future Firebirds.

It costs approximately £1,000 to provide support and training for just one woman to take part in this process. I would like to raise as much money as possible to enable more women like me to find some positivity after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and if you are able to please donate whatever you can.
