Story

My name is Bill Redston (some also know me as Don) and I’m a 96-year-old World War Two veteran from Wolverhampton. I took part in D-Day on 6th June 1944 and also served in Burma during the far-east campaign. On 3rd October this year I hugged 100 trees to raise money for Rainforest Trust UK, which is an excellent charity run by my son, Christopher. We all know that climate change is one of the biggest threats facing our planet, and I wanted to play my part in making the future safer for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You can see some photos of my tree-hugging event by clicking on the icon in the top right of the photo above.

I'd like to thank everyone who supported my tree-hugging efforts by making a donation to this page. You can still support my tree-hugging efforts by clicking on the GIVE NOW button on this page. I hugged my 100 trees at the British National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, as this place holds very special memories for me. I worked as a volunteer in the Arboretum’s early days and helped establish a permanent memorial for Royal Navy Coastal Forces personnel lost
during the war. I received the Legion D’Honneur from the French Defence attaché at the 77th anniversary of D-Day at the Arboretum in
June of this year, and in 2020 I also met Prince Charles and the Prime
Minister at the 75th anniversary of VJ Day. For photos of these events, please click on the icon in the top left corner of the photo at the top of this page.

100% of your donation will be directed to the charity’s Rainforest Climate Action Fund, which is used to protect our planet's most threatened old-growth rainforests. These forests not only store and sequester vast quantities of carbon, but are also home to over 50% of the world’s species, many of which are endangered. However, rainforests are still being cut down at a rate of 70,000 acres a day, causing species extinction and driving climate change. YOUR DONATION WILL ALSO BE DOUBLED by a generous supporter of Rainforest Trust UK, meaning every pound you give will protect twice as much rainforest.

Thank you for supporting my Hug 100 Trees appeal - I am very moved by the amount of support I've received from family, friends and strangers alike. Together we can protect the forests and the climate.  Thank you.
