THE CHARITY: London’s Air Ambulance:
The charity delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London, serving the 10 million people who live, work and commute within the M25.
London – the hospital we operate in: Trauma patients can suffer injuries, which must be corrected quickly in order to prevent death or life-long disability. Our team works alongside the London Ambulance Service to provide rapid, effective treatment as soon as possible after injury. Our advanced trauma doctor and paramedic can perform procedures to relieve pain, straighten broken limbs, perform open chest surgery to restart the heart, give blood and deliver emergency anaesthesia. At the roadside. Within minutes of injury.
Pre-hospital care - Pre-hospital Care defines the delivery of medical care before the patient arrives at hospital. This may be on a street, in an alleyway, under a train or in a field. We bring the hospital to the patient….wherever that may be.
We provide the same medical treatments that you would expect from an Emergency Department, operating theatre or Intensive Care Unit….. we bring the hospital directly to our patients.
Some of our patients would not have survived without our intervention during this phase. London’s Air Ambulance has provided pre-hospital care in London for 25 years and our dedicated teams have helped over 30,000 patients.
Wherever we are needed- Last year, we performed open chest surgery for 38 patients in cardiac arrest at the roadside – a procedure performed in an attempt to restart the heart, usually after a stab wound to the chest. We have an 18% survival rate for this procedure, the highest in the world. Find out more about our work.
We serve the 10 million people who live, work and travel within the M25 in the moments of their greatest need.
We have one team and one helicopter to do so.
If you are able, please help us continue and expand this life-saving service.
