Story

My story

On the 18th August 2018 my husband and I gave birth to our first baby - a beautiful boy named Jack - but sadly it wasn't a gentle welcome to the world...

You dream of hearing your baby's first reassuring cry but for us that didn't happen for a very long 7 minutes and 30 seconds.

Jack was born in meconium and breathed it in on his way out - he collapsed one lung and both were covered in dark patches. The Neonatal team were there from the very start, carrying out life saving resuscitation and then providing continued care as he was treated for Bacterial Meningitis, Sepsis and Pneumonia (we will never know which he had, but he showed signs of infection).

The team in the hospital were exceptional at such a horribly hard time, supporting us in many ways including breastfeeding to help Jack fight off the infection.

Jack spent 24 hours in the NICU which cost around £900 and I'd like to raise that total to cover his care, helping the team save other babies.

Myself and a team of parents are challenging ourselves by walking 12 miles from Bodmin to Padstow on 9th Feb 2019 whilst carrying our babies - it may sound easy but picture carrying at least a stone in weight, having to stop for feeds, nappy changes and fighting through major tantrum melt downs!

Royal Cornwall Hospital

Patients are diagnosed & treated faster, families & loved ones are more comfortable, and staff travel out of county for specialized training…all through generous support given to Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity. Advancements and innovations in healthcare provision help return patients back to health quicker, yet are hard to predict. Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity capitalises on these advancements by purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, conducting innovative research, and providing healing environments as soon as they are available.
