Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia have both declared states of emergency following what BBC calls "worst ever" floods in this region. The heaviest rain and worst floods since records began 120 years ago already took three lives, and entire towns - such as Doboj, Maglaj, Sabac, Obrenovac - are under water. Thousands of Bosnians and Serbians are displaced from their homes, while others are trapped in buildings without access to drinking water, food, medicine, or power.
A number of NGOs and humanitarian organizations are doing wonderful work to aleviate some of the hardships that continue with the steady rainfall. With local partners in both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, Save the Children's North West Balkans office (http://nwb.savethechildren.net/) is uniquely positioned to provide humanitarian assistance to both affected countries, with special attention paid to their youngest population in need.
So far, Save the Children has responded to the needs identified by its local partner NGOs in both countries by distributing water pumps, electricity generators, boats, raincoats, rubber boots and dehumidifiers. Next priority is provision of blankets and sleeping bags for the evacuated population, with focus on families with children.
After the rapid needs assessment that Save the Children will undertake within the next 48 hours, further decision will be taken with regards to delivery of food parcels, hygiene kits, and other non-food items.
