Devizers To Westminster Internation Canoe Race · 6 April 2012

The Sick Children’s Trust is the charity that gives families with a seriously ill child in hospital a comfortable place to stay and a friendly ear to listen in one of our ten ‘Homes from Home’. By providing families with somewhere to stay near their child they have one less thing to worry about.

Story

Hi Everyone

From the 6th-9th of April, across the Easter weekend, Ed and I will be taking part in the annual DW endurance race. Across the 4 days we will be kayaking 125 miles beginning at Devizes, Wiltshire and finishing at Westminster Bridge. The route is split mainly between the Kennet and Avon Canal (52 miles) and the Thames (55 miles) , and has 77 portages.

We began training in September with the 8 other Marlborough crews and have endured through the snow and hail of 2012, even training in frozen canals! We are approaching the final stages of training and have already taken part in 2 'waterside races', last weekend paddling 24 miles, with a 3rd race (34 miles) on its way shortly.

These have been great training but are only over single days, inevitably the 4 days are going to be mentally and physically exhausting, not to mention the camping and 6:00 wake up. But knowing that we are racing for charity, not just as a personal challenge will be a great drive for us.

I am raising money for the Sick Childrens Trust which provides free accommodation for the families of hospitalised children, minutes away from the paediatric wards. This means that for families to support their children through operations and recuperation is made considerable easier. I chose this cause as I have family connections to the trust and know that it makes a huge difference to the families involved.
