Story

I started running about two years ago. Last year I ran a half marathon in Skye and the Glencoe trail marathon which I  really enjoyed. This year it is five years since my father-in-law died. It is in his memory that, this year, I am going to run two marathons and raise money for the Suffolk Oxygen Therapy Centre.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used for a wide range of conditions. My father-in-law John, who was a Head & Neck patient, was referred by the hospital while undergoing his cancer treatment . It helped his gums to heal and he was able to have his teeth removed without leaving holes which may not have healed due to the radiation treatment.

Please read Johns story in his own words who had his Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment at the Suffolk Oxygen Therapy Centre site in Great Blakenham, Ipswich:

“When hyperbaric treatment was first mentioned to me I didn't have a clue what it was or did. I was concerned about what it involved and even though I looked it up on the Internet it didn't allay my worries, so I decided to go and see for myself what it was all about. They immediately put me at ease and were very friendly while showing me around. They then sat me down and explained exactly what happens, the object was to force more oxygen into my blood which would help the healing process of my gums when I had half my teeth out. In the end I had to have 2 lots of 30 treatments as I had the rest of my teeth out at a later date. It takes about an hour and a half for 1 treatment, taking about 15 mins to get down to the required depth and pressure, then you have an hour of pure oxygen with it then taking about 15 mins to come back up to normal pressure.

The first time I went in I was accompanied (all new people are) in case I felt panicky especially when the door was sealed. After a while it was just as if I was sitting in an armchair relaxing. I didn't feel any different and it does not hurt, the only thing is as you reach your diving depth you notice it being colder. I always make sure that I wrap up warm and have a hot drink when I come out. There is nothing to be frightened about and they are all friendly and trained in the operation of the equipment and you are never on your own. If you end up being in one of the chambers on your own the CCTV is always on and they are in contact with you by radio to make sure you are alright. I often sleep but others read, listen to music on headphones and some play scrabble with each-other, so don't worry if you need it because it really works and everyone is helpful.”
