Story
Bridget has been attending the monthly Nature Tots sessions (having recently become the twice monthly Forest Tots sessions) since she was around 18 months old, at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's Potteric Carr nature reserve in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
Potteric Carr's newly built visitors centre and café has meant that the old Kingfisher café set in the heart of the reserve, is in the process of being redeveloped as a dedicated education centre. While YWT has been given donations to help towards buying the resources and equipment it needs, there's still a lot to be done including additional furniture, technology and teaching/education resources to help them maximise it's effectiveness for all, and to allow them to offer a diverse programme of learning to young people.
The education officer Kat Wooley is an amazing education leader and really enthuses the kids in her charge with a love of nature and exploration. The events for youngsters vary from regular term time sessions for toddlers and homeschool networks, to one-off weekend, school holiday and special events for kids and young people of all ages aimed at making nature available to as diverse an audience as possible.
Bridget (who turns 4 in June) has been inspired by her parents doing a 1000 mile walking challenge, to ask if she could join in by also doing one of the two Country Walking magazine's walking challenges this year. She is aiming at completing a minimum of 500 miles of walking by 31st December 2017, and hoping to raise at least £1 for each of the miles she has to walk.
We're planning to attempt to walk one of the 3 Yorkshire peaks during the summer as well as possibly planning a few non-walking events as well. Keep coming back through the year to see our updates on Bridget's progress.
