Story

Bristol Free School Students recently signed up to the Barnardo's "Virtual Challenge". We are attempting to scoot the distance from Bristol to Africa - all in our own playground!

UPDATES:

February 2013:

A resilient and determined team of students finally completed their scoot to Africa, approximately 1300 miles done. 2 members of the team had scooted more than 100 miles. Their scooter wheels were worn down to metal and the bearings no better than metal filings!

The scoot took a huge amount of sweat, hard work, bloodied knees and even a broken bone. It was worth it however and what a phenomenal effort by the students. Well done to all who took part!

October 2012

Following a schocking summer of rain and wind the students got back on their scooters for a fortnight of super scooting in the Autumn term 2012. They managed to take a huge chunk out of the total miles required.

10th May:

Rain Rain Go Away! The terrible weather has continued to impede the scooting progress. The team have now clocked up a staggering 767 miles. Madrid is only 210 miles away and from there it's a mere 301 miles to Africa. The last few weeks have been difficult. Some have hit the proverbial wall as the realisation of just how far we have to go has sunk in and the rain has dampened spirits. A core of inspirational students haven't let things get them down however, and are making excellent progress when the conditions allow. Keep going BFS!

30th April:

It seems like a long time since we let you know how we've been getting on. Despite the Easter break and 2 weeks of non-stop rain the scooters have made good progress and have crossed the Spanish border (647 miles). There's only the matter of a few hundred miles to Madrid!

Hopefully the weather will improve and we can get back on the scooters.

2nd March:

What a week! We clocked up an impressive 130 miles bringing the grand total to 320. This puts us right in the middle of Paris. We think we deserve to celebrate this achievement in the coming weeks! A mere 600+ miles to Madrid...

24th February:

Despite a slow start, and losing Monday to staff training we've made good progress this week. The weekly total of 83 miles takes us to a grand total of 190. This leaves us 4 miles short of the French mainland and 130 miles from Paris. The aim is to get to Paris by the 2nd March. Have a look at our photo gallery to see how we managed to cross the channel!

10th February:

We began our scoot to Africa on Monday the 6th February and despite the adverse weather on Friday we reached London before breaking up for Half-Term. We marked our arrival with visits to Buckingham Palace and Big Ben plus a race with Boris Johnson.

100% genuine photographs will be posted over the next week or so once they've returned from the developers.

Our next milestone is Paris, we have a little over 300 miles to go which is about 3 weeks scooting at this rate!
