Story

Did you know?

- HALF of all known species are likely to be extinct in the next 20 years.

- Around 4 species become extinct every hour

- There are over 18,000 threatened species in the world.

The problem

Poaching is a big problem for wild animals. Gorillas are hunted for the bushmeat trade to be sold on the black market. Quite often are gorillas hands sold as souvenirs and used as ashtrays.

When families of gorillas are killed, the frightened babies of the group are taken and sold as pets.

Many of the gorillas on the rehabilitation projects of the Aspinall Foundation are rescued from such crimes.

Black rhinos are hunted for their horns which are brutally removed. Numbers of the species are dangerously low, going from 65,000 in 1960 to less than 3,000 today.

Just 2 decades ago there were up to 2,000,000 African elephants, now numbers have decreased to around just 350,000.

Whilst initially trying to protect gorillas, the Aspinall Foundation has found their projects to benefit many other species and now aims to protect various species around the world threatened with extinction.

About The Aspinall Foundation

The Aspinall Foundation is an internationally renowned animal conservation charity working to save species from extinction.

This charity is special because not only does it aim to protect endangered animals but also preserve the habitats they live in.

The foundation started right here in the U.K., with animal husbandry and respected breeding programmes at Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks in Kent, supporting reintroduction and animal protection projects.

The Aspinall Foundation runs projects in Africa, Java and Madagascar, as well as providing financial support to other schemes around the world. This work ensures that some of the most endangered species on our planet are being saved from extinction, such as the western lowland gorilla, Javan gibbon, greater bamboo lemur and black rhino.

What has the charity achieved?

- Protect 1 million acres of habitat in Congo and Gabon.

- Reintroduced over 50 western lowland gorillas and celebrated 19 births.

- Built a new project in Indonesia to rescue, rehabilitate and reintroduce Javan primates.

- Succesfully reintroduced black rhino into protected areas in the wild.

- Protect over 200 greater bamboo lemurs, thought to be on of the most endangered animals in the world, and have recorded 21 births.

What could your donation help towards?

- It costs £1,000,000 to manage the projects in Africa, Java and Madagascar protecting the endagered species. Donations to the charity are a huge help in ensuring this protection can be continued.

- The Aspinall Foundation is independant of the wild animal parks in Kent and therefore solely relies on donations from the public.

- £3 can pay for the bedding to make an animals trip to the wild more comfortable.

- £3 can pay for vital vaccinations for the animals to have the best chance of survival in the wild.

- £3 can help buy fruit and vegetables from local markets close to the projects to provide varied diets for the animals.

- It costs £50 to transport one primate to the airport.

- It costs £1500 for the flight for one primate!
