'Bug City' World Record Attempt · 16 May 2014

We care for children & young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambs, Essex, Norfolk & Suffolk and support their families. This can be at home, in hospital or at one of three hospices at Milton, The Treehouse and The Nook. We rely on voluntary donations for the majority of our income.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

My mission…

I’m attempting to create the largest insect hotel or 'Bug City' in the world for three very important reasons which are all very close to my heart:

  1. To help raise awareness of the importance of solitary bees, pollinators and other beneficial insects in our gardens and the vital part they play in the biodiversity of our surroundings. The construction will also create a host of other habitats suitable for a wide range of other wildlife that may be in the area.
  2. To raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and the wonderful support they offer to terminally ill children and their families.
  3. To create a legacy educational resource to bring together and inspire the whole community.

If you share my passion for wildlife, want to show your appreciation for the invaluable round the clock support offered by EACH and want to help me create an amazing project for the whole community then I would love your support. Any donation would be greatly appreciated! Every little helps as they say!

Planned Completion Date: June 2015

A project for the whole community

My intention is to treat the insect hotel, or ‘Bug City’ as I like to call it, as a piece of art as much as a habitat for solitary bees,  pollinators and other beneficial insects. I have also designed the Bug City project to maximise community engagement.

I hope to encourage the local authority and local businesses to show their support by providing materials for the main framework. Materials do not have to be new, in fact, I would prefer to use recycled materials wherever possible.

The current design incorporates twenty smaller box frames. I intend to invite seventeen local primary schools to create their own ‘bug panel’ to include within the final ‘Bug City’. The remaining three box frames will be allocated to each of the EACH hospices.

I'll be documenting the whole process via regular video diaries in a dedicated section on my website http://www.wildlifegadgetman.com

I am working closely with Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Buglife to ensure that the final 'Bug City' construction offers ideal habitat for its intended inhabitants and a valuable educational resource.

If you are still a little undecided as to whether or not to donate please take a couple of minutes to watch Charlie's Story in the Gallery below. This touching video highlights the incredible support offered by East Anglia's Children's Hospices. Their work would not be possible without our continuing support.
