The Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) is an autonomous not-for-profit institution in Malawi where BSSH and BAHT aim to work with and train local surgeons, trainees and therapists to deliver and educate in patient care.

Story

The vision of the BSSH BAHT LION Project is to support the development and co-ordination of a sustainable multi-disciplinary Hand Unit in Lilongwe, through the specialist education and training of the local surgical and therapy teams. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with one of the highest rates of road traffic trauma. By helping to improve hand trauma care, we can restore livelihoods following such potentially life-changing injuries. We also hope to improve the management of other more chronic conditions, such as severe hand infections and tumours, and thereby save lives.

The British Society for Surgery of the Hand is collaborating with Osteotec Ltd to raise funds through The BOLOS (BSSH Osteotec Lake of Stars) Challenge - a team-based Pentathalon 'around or across' the distance of beautiful Lake Malawi.

Our multidisciplinary Hand Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is coming together to raise awareness and funds to support this incredible project. Please support us by donating towards the costs of essential surgical and therapy equipment and sending volunteers out to train and educate the local teams in caring for these devastating injuries.
