Story
Hi there, as you're already on this page, you probably know a little bit about what me and my friend ruth are doing this easter, but i'll explain a little deeper;
This easter (during the time-off from uni), Ruth and I are intending to do a sponsored hitch from Manchester to Morocco! Which for the geographically ignorant is 1600+ miles!
Don't forget it's ALL FOR CHARITY!
Each hitcher is required to gain sponsorship of at least £350, but it would be nice to earn above and beyond that figure. The sponsorship itself goes solely to the charity, and does not go towards paying for anything such as living costs or flights back for myself and ruth, (a figure we'll have to fund ourselves!).
The charity we are doing this for is Link Community Development (LCD), a charity that works in several African countries (Ghana, Malawi, Uganda and South Africa) to build schools, train teachers and generally improve the quality of education, so every child gets a fair chance at what we were lucky enough to have been born with.
LCD seeks to achieve this by working towards four main objectives:
To improve the quality of teaching in schools by providing in-service training and classroom support for under-qualified teachers.
To improve the development of the school as a whole, by providing training and support in areas such as school management, development planning and community based fundraising.
To ensure all our work has the potential to promote change which is both sustainable and systemic, by working in partnership with local institutions, in particular departments of education.
To support community involvement in schools and ensure local people have a voice in decision-making concerning the education services available to them.
The Morocco Hitch has been the primary source of income for LCD for 15 years; last year a record 670 hitchers raised £290,000, which was enough to provide development grants for 1,160 schools; money that goes towards the most pressing needs, like classrooms, books and even toilets.
For the children in Africa:
£10 could pay for a desk for a child who now studies on the floor.
£25 could pay for education support workers to visit 5 schools. This ensures schools have the personal support they need to tackle problems both inside the classroom and out.
£100 could train 10 teachers at an HIV / AIDS workshop. Education remains the most effective 'shield' that society has in the battle against HIV and AIDS.
£250 sponsors an entire school for one year. Sponsorship helps fund much needed development grants. It also funds vital training and support for the sponsored school, and more besides! (
£500 could pay for 50 teachers to attend a literacy workshop. Literacy provides children with a sense of pride, competence, and ability to function more effectively in society.
It would be brilliant if you could just reach into your pockets (metaphorically, i don't want to be carrying over £350 in loose change thanks very much!) and give whatever you can to a very good cause! Thank you in advance!
