Have you ever felt you've been given a second chance? I did after living with a debilitating autoimmune disorder (Ulcerative Colitis) and having my permanent ileostomy (stoma). Living with a 'bag for life' wasn't the worst thing that could have happened, in fact it was the best. It gave me back freedom - freedom from pain, freedom from being totally housebound and hospitalised, freedom to play with my kids, freedom to get out doors and live my best life!

Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Association (IA) have been there beside me every step of the way since my surgery 10 years ago. Their network of groups of volunteers across the country are always there to help their local ostomates and organise events, many are trained to be visitors to those who are new to living with an ileostomy, they are always there at the end of the phone with advice, information and support. IA fund research projects to help improve the lives of ostomates and contribute on many national forums, speaking out for those living with an ileostomy.

The charity survives on donations and legacies, so by pushing myself to swim, bike and run 2,020 miles in 2020 I know that I will not only be thanking them for their support, but will show others who have an ileostomy (or who are confronting surgery), that having a bag isn't the worst situation. You can get outdoors, you can go for a walk, you can run, you can cycle and you can swim. You can have a life away from the toilet!
