Story
My
sister Denise and I are going to abseil 170ft down the side of Fort
Dunlop on Sunday 18th July. (time to be confirmed) Neither of us have
ever done anything on this scale so its a little scary. We are doing
this to raise funds for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Back in February 2007 Denise told me that she had been diagnosed with something called a macro-prolactinoma. I, like many people, had never even heard of this and as Denise explained what little she did know it sounded absolutely terrifying.
A prolactinoma is a benign tumour caused by an excess of the hormone prolactin which grows on the pituatry gland.
It has had a massive effect on Denise's life and those of us around her but I dare say, knowing Denise, that there are many people in her life who know very little or nothing about what she has been through.
This
is why I decided to arrange a charity event for us to do, to do
something to raise some money specifically for research in to this area
and to raise awareness of this and similar conditions.
Many
people have never heard of this condition even though
micro-prolactinoma's are quite common in adults. Macro-prolactinoma's
however are not as common and can lead to surgery if the tumor can't be
shrunk to a safe level. Micro-prolactinoma's are smaller and
macro-prolactinoma's are above 10mm.
Denise has been treated succesfully at The Selly Oak Hospital and the tumour is now back to a safe level. Most services from the Selly Oak Hospital have now been moved to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and this is where Denise will continue to be monitored.
The Q.E hospital does a lot of research in different areas and we're delighted that the money will be going exactly where we beleive it can be used best.
So get
your hand in your pockets people and you are more that welcome to come
on the day and support us.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully donating
