Walking a million steps for WAY

Caron Benson is raising money for WAY - Widowed And Young
In memory of Cathal Benson
WAY offers a peer-to-peer support to anyone whose partner died when they were aged 50 or under, married or not, with or without children, inclusive of sexual orientation, gender, race and religion.

Story

The 10th of August 2020 marked four years since my husband Cathal died of neuroendocrine cancer.

I was told about and joined Widowed And Young fairly soon after Cathal died and have found immense comfort and support from many of its members, through its online forums and member organised meet-ups.

During July, August and September 2020 I have been walking my way towards a million steps for Widowed And Young.

In July I walked a total of 351,610 steps / 286km.

August being the anniversary of Cathal’s death is a much slower month for me these days. On the 10th of August I walked the beach at Low Newton-by-the-Sea in Northumberland, reaching a cumulative step total of 458,478 / 374km.

On what would have been our 6th wedding anniversary I walked the grounds of Forty Hall where we held our wedding reception to reach a cumulative step total of 870,495 / 678km.

Over the next 4 days, today included, I need to walk another 56,659 steps (14,165 steps a day) to make a million steps on the 30th of September.

I know averaging 10,000 steps a day is not a huge amount to some, but it is a challenge for me. Any money you are able to spare is appreciated, especially at this moment in time when coronavirus has significantly impacted charity’s income streams and those bereaved as a result of coronavirus sadly have cause to join us.

£2 pays for a WAY member to access the WAY support helpline providing 1:1 telephone advice and counselling (24 hours a day / 365 days a year).

£5 pays for marketing materials to reach out to 100 young bereaved people who could benefit from joining WAY.

£25 pays for a grieving person who cannot afford the membership fee to join WAY for a year.

£50 pays for a memorial fund donation to help fund a place for a WAY member who is struggling to attend a WAY event.

Equally as important as fundraising, I ask you to please remember Widowed And Young in the event anyone you know might need them / us in future (for anyone aged 50 or under when their partner dies).

As I walk my way to a million steps over the next 4 days any and all messages of motivation gratefully received!
