I am a NHS Healthcare Chaplain and when I started this challenge it was to run a 1000 miles to raise awareness and funds for the Newcastle Hospitals End of Life charity 'A Gift of Kindness' including a 50kms ultramarathon. The charity funds supports families of patients who are approaching the end of their life, with practical things like memory boxes, phone chargers and wash kits/comfort bags. These are things that in my work as a chaplain I have found help bring comfort and support.

Since the challenge commenced on 1st January 2018, a close member of my family has been diagnosed with a nasty, nasty lymphoma and is undergoing treatment. My way of coping with work and then coming home and dealing with all that this brings, is to run, I said I would run until he was in remission and I am delighted that he is now in remission.

 On Sat 23 Feb 2019  along with two good friends, I ran the Duergar Night Crawler a 10 mile fell run held during the night over Simonside hills. It was a harsh course, but the weather was remarkably kind and we had a great run out. 

With #johnsmiles in remission, this page will close at the end of February. What started out as a bid to run a 1000 miles and raise a £1000 has seen:
 912 cycling and 1260.5 running miles as at 24th February 2019 with £5,754 + £1,021 giftaid raised.
