TEAM ALBON ran in the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 23rd February 2020 to raise funds and awareness for the MND Association Charity, West Sussex South Branch. The team consisted of Chris Albon (John's son), Olivia Albon-Cary (John's Grandaughter), and Family friends - Mark Heath, Jason Finch, Perry Geoghegan and Paul Garmeson. They ran in probably the worst weather in its history with 50mph winds and driving rain. However, it was smiles all the way!
John Albon, Chris and Cathy's Dad, Olivia, Frankie, Grace and Will's Grandad was diagnosed with MND in August this 2018 at the age of 71. This has been a huge and devastating shock for John and our family. We knew nothing of this cruel disease prior to the diagnosis.
John is an incredibly special, brave and stoic man, who is now trying to live life to the full and we are all so proud of him and his achievements. He is Brighton born and bred and completed most of his police career for Sussex Police at Brighton during the 70s, 80,s and 90,s. He finished his career in Brighton as the Police Chief Superintendent and was then promoted to Assistant Chief Constable for Devon & Cornwall. He was a marathon and keen runner himself, and John & Cathy ran their first ever Marathon in 2003, crossing the finish line together, holding hands.
Cathy and Olivia ran the Brighton Marathon in April 2019 and everyone helped us raise over £5,000 and John managed to join us at the finishing line, so we could cross together, holding hands again!
A Charity Golf Day was also held at Worthing Golf Club in May 2019 with over 100 golfers playing to support John and MNDA, raising another £4,500.
Also on Friday 31st May, 2019, John's grandaughter, Frankie Cary sang in a Charity Concert for the MND Association. She sang her Grandads favourite songs alongside The Gruffs Male Voice Choir. The evening was very emotional and a huge success. Frankie also sang alongside a local band at the Last Resort Club in Worthing in July, raising Funds.
We are hoping to arrange many more events and turn this into a positive thing.
Motor Neurone Disease is a disease like no other! It is an incurable, untreatable worsening condition. This cruel disease attacks the nerves controlling the body's muscles, eventually taking away the ability to walk talk, eat and even breathe. It kills six people per day in the UK. A third of people diagnosed today will die within a year, more than half within 2 years.
NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS. THERE IS NO CURE!
Anything you can give to support this incredible charity would help.
As there is no treatment for this disease, there are no hospital or doctors trips and nothing can be done medically to help. Once you have received the devastating diagnosis that turns your life upside down, it is the MND Association Charity that most sufferers and their families turn to. They make sure people living with MND can access the best quality care and support possible, and that their voices are heard.
