Theatre for a Change works to empower the most vulnerable and marginalised women and girls in Malawi, Ghana and worldwide to find their voice and assert their rights. We use a unique combination of drama and participatory learning, with a particular focus on sexual and reproductive health.

Story

In March 2014, I travelled to Ghana to support Theatre for a Change in its work with some of the most vulnerable and marginalised groups in the country. The charity exists for the empowerment of women and girls and works specifically with groups at risk of poor sexual and reproductive health and those who have limited opportunities to assert their rights.

I have never looked back. I have been supporting and working with the charity to this day. I have seen the difference theatre can make to a female sex worker in standing up to a client, to a rural school girl in being able to participate in school and to a young female teacher as she sets out on her career for the very first time. For many of these women, the skills they learn can be essential in protecting themselves from violence, abuse and HIV.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a culture where a girl's education is celebrated and where my voice as a woman is listened to and counted. I am climbing the three peaks for the countless women and girls all over the world who have not enjoyed the same experience and whose gender not only denies them the right to speak out but can also put their health at serious risk.
