Richmond RUNFEST Half Marathon 2019 · 15 September 2019 ·
As anyone who knows me will know, I hate sport (of any kind), and it hates me. So for me to be running a half marathon in 4 months of my own accord there must be a pretty special reason.
Huntington’s disease is a progressive neurological condition currently
affecting around 7000 people in England and Wales. It causes the loss of muscle control, leading to uncontrolled movements and eventually the inability perform vital functions such as eating or breathing. Sufferers of Huntington’s disease also face severe emotional difficulties including depression and personality changes alongside deteriorating brain function.
It is a genetic disease, meaning in this case that children of HD sufferers
have a 1/2 chance of developing the disease. As such, the disease may devastate generation after generation of the same family, who, after seeing a loved one (or many loved ones) struggle with the condition, may then have to go through the same experience themselves. Huntington’s is, as of now, a terminal diagnosis with no effective treatment. However, rapid developments in gene therapy in recent years have increased the hope for a cure in the near future.
Huntington’s Disease Association offers support and care for everyone in the UK affected by Huntington’s disease, as well as championing the cause and enabling them to carry out more research torwards finding a cure.
