Brighton Marathon 2023 · 2 April 2023 ·

Just 4.8% of people with a learning disability are employed in England. We support young people with learning disabilities to acquire the skills, confidence and independence they need to gain paid employment, reach their full potential and find their place in society.

Story

I’ll be running the 2023 Brighton Marathon for Team Domenica.

Team Domenica was founded in 2016 by Rosa Monckton, whose younger daughter Domenica has Down’s Syndrome.

Their mission is to support people with learning disabilities discover their career potential by helping them find and retain meaningful employment.

Just 5.1% of people with learning disabilities are employed in England but Team Domenica helps build the skills and confidence young adults need to find work through its unique Supported Internship Programme and fantastic network of businesses within the community.

The results have been fantastic with Team Domenica's Supported Internship Programme achieving an 84% paid employment rate, showing that it is possible to remove barriers which have long existed.

As the younger brother to someone with autism, I have personally witnessed how people with learning disabilities can be perceived by society and how that can lead to limited opportunities.

Unfortunately my brother is too old to take part in Team Domenica's programme but many are benefitting from the fantastic work their staff do on a daily basis.

Like all charities though, Team Domenica needs the kindness of others to help raise funds to keep up and improve the life-changing work they're carrying out.

This is why I've decided to do my second marathon, and first for 12 years. Any donation you can make for the 26.2 miles I'll be covering for Team Domenica will be GREATLY appreciated.

If you're in the area in on Sunday April 2nd, feel free to come down and support (I will need it).

Thanks,

Dan x :)
