Story

The most common cause of death in males under 45 is suicide. I find that fact so difficult to get my head around, something that is totally preventable.

My family, like so many, has been directly effected by suicide. We lost my uncle Steve after he took his own life, he was just 26. This has left a hole in our family that cannot be replaced, a father that hasn't seen his daughter or grandchildren grow up, a brother my Dad and Uncle Rich miss terribly. Heartbreakingly I never got the opportunity to meet him and his death was completely preventable. I often think about all the things he could have done and where he would be now.

This was a time before mental health was talked about and support was rarely available. Although as a society have made so much progress there is still more to be done to provide support especially during these uncertain times when many will be struggling with their mental health.

I'm running this 5 miler to help us realise a vision of a world free from suicide.

About The Lions Barber Collective

Our mission is to create non-clinical, non-judgemental safe spaces where people feel comfortable to talk about their mental health & signpost them to support and information. We do this by creating awareness, interest and desire in barbers to train & the general public to know where to find or access help. We will train the barbers using both our online and face to face BarberTalk training education packages that provide barbers with the skills to RECOGNISE, ASK, LISTEN and HELP TO HELP. Our vision is of a world free from suicide!

About the charity

We aim to raise awareness for mental wellbeing and suicide prevention, which we hope will lower the stigma and taboo surrounding them. We also aim to educate barbers to be able to RECOGNISE the signs, when to TALK, how to LISTEN and the ability to SIGNPOST those in their chairs and communities.
