Story

Barry was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome on 6th May 2018.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks healthy nerve cells in your peripheral nervous system. This leads to weakness, numbness, and tingling. It can eventually cause paralysis.

Luckily for us Barry fought as hard as he could and has managed to make a speedy recovery, although he had a month or so stay in ICU he stayed off ventilators and was seen regularly by the neuro team to ensure he was doing all he could to make his recovery as speedy and painless as humanly possible. Barry has now been moved to the rehabilitation centre in clatterbridge, which specialises in the condition he has suffered with, however prior to this, he lived every day in the countess of chester waiting for the friendly physio faces to come through the door. Kath, Lol, and Mike and the rest of the physio team became Barry's hero's whilst residing there and went above and beyond to keep up his spirits and push him as hard as he could physically go on each and every therapy session with them. We could never thank them enough for all their efforts whilst treating Barry, always making us feel welcome to come along and watch Barry's progression when possible.

Due to this, we are (and Barry will be taking part too) participating in the countess walk for wards on 14th October 2018. We can choose either 2k or 6k, hoping to do the 6k. Our chosen ward is definitely the neuro physio team, this is so close to our hearts, especially as most of the equipment they used with Barry had to be fund raised for previously as he needed taller equipment. Making his experience much more comfortable.

The least we can do is give a little back.

We are truly grateful for any amount donated, no matter how big or small and will take great joy in WALKING this with the big man himself!

UPDATE**** Barry was officially discharged from hospital on 6th August, able to walk with a walking stick and sometimes without, he's climbing stairs and even cooking! We are so pleased with his progress! He will have no issues taking part in the walk at this rate

UPDATE**** 2ND Sept. Barry has now been home for a whole month, and attending the gym most days in order to build up his strength to achieve 6k walk! He's walking without a stick and is nearly back to his fully functioning self. He just needs to work more on balance and being able to walk longer distances 😊
