Story
In 1994, the Rwanda Civil War led to the cold-blooded murder of 1,174,000 people in a period of 100 days.
Thats 10,000 a day...
400 an hour...
7 every minute.
However, the violence was not only contained in Rwanda, and spilled over into neighbouring Burundi, leading to many thousand more murders.
Although the scenes depicted in Hotel Rwanda were a mere 18 years ago, their recovery has been extraordinary, to the extent that it is, actually, one of the most stable countries on the continent to date. This recovery has been down to the tireless efforts of the charities supporting the some 40,000 orphans remaining in the two countries.
One such charity is Tearfund. They have been working in Rwanda since the early 1990s to help communities help themselves rebuild and recover.
In January, I am departing for 3 months to work in one such community in Kigali. Working in a team of four, we will be assisting the work of our local partners there, Moucecore, on three general projects:
- Developing the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes, by building water tanks and educating on a range of hygiene issues.
- Assisting with the Child Holistic Development project, through incorporating good hygiene practices and teaching English
- Supporting the church in their education of a wide range of development issues

I will of course keep you all updated on how I am getting on, the people I am meeting and the projects we are working on throughout my stay (internet dependent of course!).
We need as many resources as we can afford in educating these communities about issues that we take for granted, and any amount of financial support you can offer, however big or small, will be crucial to rebuilding these countries from the devastating conflicts that they endured, and the debilitating cycles of poverty that still affect them.
Thank you,
Charlie.
