Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am cycling from Lands End to John o Groats in memory of my brother Blyth and to raise funds for the Friends of Ian Charles Community Hospital Charity in Grantown-on-Spey.

Please follow my progress on the blog at;

http://www.1000milebikeride.co.uk

Those of you who go out on the hills walking, climbing or ski-ing may know of Blyth's work as he was the head of the Scottish Avalanche Information Service based at the National Outdoor Centre in Glenmore Lodge near Aviemore.

He co-authored the standard textbook on avalanches and avalanche safety, "Chance In A  Million?" with Bob Barton.

He was also an accomplished climber, climbing the 6000 metre Himilayan peak Ama Dablam at the age of 60 followed by an attempt on the summit of the 8000 metre Choi Oyu a year or so later.

During the final stages of his 18 month battle with a brain tumour Blyth received care and latterly palliative care at Ian Charles Hospital in Grantown-on-Spey.

The treatment Blyth received there was world class.

In addition to caring for Blyth in a thoroughly professional manner, showing care, respect and kindness, the staff also showed the same qualities to all of the friends and family who visited his bedside to keep him company in his final weeks.

It is for this reason that I wish to help the work of the hospital in some small way by doing this cycle trip.

It will be a tough challenge especially as I will be riding unsupported carrying all the equipment needed for the trip on the bike, but I have been in training and am looking forward to the ride.
