We knew Mya was going to be born with Gastroschisis ( a condition where the Intestines are on the outside of the body) but due to a severely dilated bowel, Mya was born via emergency C section at 34 weeks on jan 7th 2013 weighing a tiny 3lb 12oz. This was the happiest day of our lives but unfortunately we didn't get the opportunity to hold our gorgeous baby girl , she was whisked away to the birminghams Children's hospital where she was to have her surgery. Mya had her first operation the night she was born... to put the majority of her bowel back in, this was successful but unfortunately they couldn't put everything back in all at once as she was so small and it would have put to much pressure on her lungs. Carefully over a course of 5 days , the bowel, was placed in a silo bag and hung above the hole in her abdomin, was allowed to fall into place naturally, the surgeon then closed Mya up. We finally had our first cuddle ,after the longest 5 days anyone could ever imagine.Then the long process started of getting her bowels to work, and getting her to feed. She went from strength to strength every day, the nurses and surgeons were amazed at how such a tiny baby bounced back and recovered like she did. After 5 long weeks we were allowed to take our baby home she weighed 5lb.
She is now a healthy beautiful 10 month old, who is coming on leaps and bounds, and a testament to the care and support we received at the hospital, especially the neo natal surgical ward, to whom we will be eternally grateful.
