Story

My Challenge by Charlie Griffiths

My Daily Challenge - As you may or may not know I was born with an eye condition called Nystagmus. This means my eye muscles are weak and I have to work harder to see things as I have little or no control over my eyes and results in double vision or as I call it 4D. This rapid eye movement gives the impression to the outside world of a person with “wobbly eyes”. My first memory of having 4D was really scary as I was sitting on the floor in year 1 straining to see the spelling off the white board when my eyes went weird and I could barely see anything. Luckily the teacher realised what had happened as I burst into tears and took took me aside. I can’t remember the detail however all I know since then people have had people fighting by my side to prevent it happening again. And yes it has happened again, lots of times, but thanks to the support I have received from the Nystagmus network the people around me at home, school and at out of school clubs now have a better understanding of my condition. This has really helped me to learn to live being the wobbly one.

My Challenge to help others - I am not the only one with this rare condition as I am only one of many hundreds and so I have challenged myself to run the BUPA 10K to raise money for the Nystagmus Charity. When I run for any distance I need to run with my eyes closed as the strain of extreme exercise brings on double vision so I will be running the race with by father and my good friend who will be guiding through the course. The money I hope to raise will help people like mini me and of all ages to cope with everyday life from the simple enlargement of font size in a novel to research in technology to help us drive. Most of all I want to do this run to make people aware of nystagmus so people like me can have the support from start to end. Please give what you can on my just giving page

THANK YOU
