Story

Thank you for taking the time to view my page.

Last year I hiked the 26-mile Macmillan Mighty Hike around the Gower peninsula in memory of my Dad, Robert Dix, who sadly passed away from cancer in June 2020 at the age of 61. With the amazing support of friends and family, I raised £1800 in sponsorship for Macmillan, which was phenomenal. Their nurses took exceptional care of Pops and I wanted to firstly pass on my thanks to everyone that supported me in that venture. Your generosity means the world.

Hiking around the Gower made me appreciate the beauty of the Welsh coastline and how little of it I have explored given that I’ve lived here for 30 (something) years. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Wales Coastal Path opening in 2012, making Wales the largest country in the world with a continuous path around its entire coast. It’s 870 miles in total, running from Chester to Chepstow and I have decided my next fundraising challenge will be to hike all of it. Having spent some time looking into the route and provided there are no unforeseen obstacles, it will take me 77 days to complete. Due to work commitments, I can’t hike this continuously or in any particular order, but will be splitting it into segments with the view to completing it by the end of Summer 2023.

My chosen charity for this challenge will be City Hospice in Cardiff. City Hospice provided valuable support to Pops and my family when he was released from hospital following his terminal cancer diagnosis. He was given the choice to move into a hospice or be cared for at home and he chose to be at home with his family and his beloved dogs by his side. We were told Pops may have months to live but his deterioration happened quickly and he passed away just 10 days later. His decision to spend his final days at home was only possible due to the extraordinary support of City Hospice providing specialist home-based palliative care. Their professionalism, care and compassion was unrivalled.

City Hospice relies on £2m a year in donations in order to provide free of charge end of life care to patients and to provide continued support to their families, from dealing with a loved one being diagnosed with a terminal illness to bereavement support, and with cancer affecting each and every one of us in some way and at some point in our lives, I can’t think of a worthier cause.

The first leg of my journey starts on Saturday 29th January 2022 from Redwick to Chepstow. Progress will be shared on here and on social media. I would love to get as many people as possible involved in hiking different sections of the coastal path so if you’d like to join me for a section of it, you would be most welcome!

Thank you, in advance, for your generosity ❤ xx
