Lake District Challenge 2021 · 12 June 2021 ·
Updated!
I’m Charlotte, I’m 28 and I’m from Fleetwood 🇬🇧
Last year I managed to raised over £3000 for charity running the race life. January this year I came across the 100km Lake District ultra challenge and immediately, without any thought, I signed up.
100km is roughly Fleetwood to Leeds. I’ll run 50km Saturday 13th June ,then camp over night, and complete the other 50km Sunday 14th at 6am. The Lake District Ultra challenge is majority trail so there is 2650m climb!
Why am I running?
In February 2019 My mum was diagnosed with throat cancer, after bloods, X-rays, PICC lines, CT’s, MRIs & PET scans we prepared for 30 sessions of radiotherapy and 6 weeks chemo.
The day finally come, we attended the oncology day unit ready to start the next few weeks and then we could eventually get back to normal life and this would all be over with.
Chemo was delayed day after day due to my mums bloods being too low - which was strange ? she’s never had chemo but was neutropenic (medical term for your blood counts low when you’ve HAD chemo). Weeks went by and eventually after a 5 day stay as an inpatient, a Haematologist said he wanted a bone marrow sample as things just weren't adding up.
Once again we was sat in the same situation. A Dr sat in front of us and was about to tear our life apart .. again.
April 2019 my mum was diagnosed with AML. Acute Myloid Leukaemia. She had a rare case of two separate primary cancers. So not connected, not a spread. two totally different cancers. The Drs words... it was ‘bad luck’. The plan was to cure the Leukaemia and then immediately treat her throat cancer.
Nevertheless, a plan was put in place & although we were unsure of the path ahead, April 18th 2019 - my mums 60th birthday It began. We entered the ward were she would spend the next 6 months on as an Inpatient and began her chemo cycles for AML. April, May, June, July, August, September and finally, in October, she was discharged.
November 2019, 6 weeks of chemo and 30 sessions of radiotherapy began for her throat cancer and Friday 13th December - my mum finished her last blast of radiotherapy.
As of February 14th 2020 my mum is in remission from AML, and we are awaiting scan results for her throat cancer. When all clear she will begin a 12 month chemo cycle for AML.
My mum has been the bravest person, ever.
Keep going mum❤️
I have decided I want to push my self to my limits and see exactly what I’m made off and hopefully in return raise some money for the Haematology ward that took care of my mum for all them months.
The ward was absolutely faultless, the care and organisation of the ward was just impeccable. There are item though that perhaps are not always funded by the NHS. Certain home comforts etc. If I can raise money to improve just one patients stay on haematology I’ll feel I've reached my goal. I know what it’s like to sit as a visitor for days at a time, so can merely grasp how it felt for my mum and other patients.
All donations will be going through the Blue Skies Charity at Blackpool Victoria Hosptial then direct through to the Haematology Ward.
On Saturday 13th June I will run 50km, starting at Kendal and stopping to camp over at night. 6am Sunday 14th I will finish my 50km - completing 100km.
It’s seeing my mum go from strength to strength every single day fighting off two cancers and smashing chemo that will push me through every single KM around the Lake District!
