Charlotte's Hachette Connect London to Paris Cycle Ride

Hachette Connect · 7 May 2017
As many of you will know, running is my sport of choice and, until last month, my experience of cycling consisted of a leisurely 10 minute ride, no more than 2 miles, twice a day, to and from the station every morning and evening.
So, clearly, the next logical step was to sign up to cycle 180 miles over 3 days from London to Paris with friends and colleagues. Madness, I hear you say (one voice in particular stands out). Why would I chose to put myself through several days of pain and English rain (bound to happen), even with the allure of a nice French red at the end of it all?
I've asked myself that same question as I've battled the elements, the hills and the novelty of padded shorts (an actual thing, who knew) with my bike over the past few weeks, trying to find my cycling legs. Well, I love a challenge for one thing (according to one I'm a "gluten" for punishment; those of you familiar with my dietary issues will appreciate the pun) but, more importantly, it's all in aid of raising money for the National Literacy Trust.
As an athletic (ahem) group of publishers, we have chosen to support a literacy charity because we want more children to unlock their potential and find their passion for reading. Sadly, a third of disadvantaged children in the UK leave primary school unable to read well enough to succeed in secondary school, severely reducing their chance of leading a happy and successful life. The National Literacy Trust works with schools, parents and local communities to counteract that and increase literacy levels in the poorest communities across the UK. It is vital that we act now to help the children living in these deprived communities and give them the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

So, there's every reason to give generously. And if the charity's good work weren't enough, some of you will know that I recently injured my shoulder and have lost out on several weeks' training. The ride will therefore be even tougher than I ever imagined and so sympathy donations are most welcome.
