Alzheimer's Society - Enduro Challenge 2010 · 27 August 2010 ·
The Enduro Challenge is a relay triathlon race from London to Paris. The race involves running from London to Dover, swimming across the English Channel and finally cycling from Calais to Paris. At the end of August this year, I shall be taking part in a team of 6 people from Credit Suisse, in this ultimate triathlon competing against 4 other rival teams including Barclays Capital, Deutsche Bank and UBS.
The relay race comprises of a tough 150km road and cross-country run from London to Dover, 40km cross-Channel swim and 300 km ride from Calais to Paris. Each team member contributes equally, taking turns during the run, swim and cycle with only brief gaps in between each discipline in which to recover. The toughest challenge will be the swim from Dover to Calais with no wetsuits allowed in the cold 16-18 degree celcius water!
Let me give you a few reasons to please make your donation as generous as you possibly can:
- 1 in 3 people over 65 will die with dementia, and there are currently over 750,000 people living with dementia in the UK today. 15,000 of these people are under 65 years old. So if you don't support Alzheimer's Society for me or for a loved one then do it for your future self - helping the Society to fund research now could mean that you don't have to go through heartbreak in the future.
- Dementia is not a natural part of ageing. Dementia is a disease of the brain which causes brain cells to die. As brain cells die people lose their memories, their skills and eventually will lose the ability to move, speak or swallow. Dementia is the biggest cause of disability in later life, and it not only affects the person with dementia but also their family, friends and carers.
