Kilimanjaro- Climbing to the Roof of Africa · 15 February 2016

Thomas Cook Children’s Charity is committed to improving children’s lives and benefiting the communities in which they live.

Story

This February, Berglind & I are travelling to Tanzania and will be embarking on a self-funded trek up Kilimanjaro. This is one of the '7 summits'- the highest mountains of each of the 7 continents of the world- with the peak being at 5895m/19,341ft.

We would love to raise a significant amount of money for charity and as the parents of 3 young children we wanted to raise money for a child-specific charity, the obvious choice being Thomas Cook Children's Charity. Money raised will be spent on improving children’s lives both in UK and around the world in the communities in which they live by helping to improve education, well-being and health care facilities.

Thomas Cook Children's Charity also work with selected charities:

Save The Children- who work in the relief effort following natural disasters, and help children affected by war, delivering food, water, healthcare, protection and education.

Happy Days Children’s Charity- who fund and organise holidays, residential trips, days out and carrying out theatre trips throughout the UK for disadvantaged young people with special needs. They help young people in special needs schools, in hospitals and hospices as well as helping individual families.

Camfed- the Campaign for Female Education. Camfed is a non-profit organisation which is working towards eradicating poverty in Africa through the education of young girls and empowerment of women. Camfed focusses on the more rural regions of African countries where poverty is widespread and girls face more chance of exclusion from the education system.

Teenage Cancer Trust- who provide expert treatment and support to the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 who are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK from the moment they hear the word ‘cancer'.

Together for Short Lives- who ensure that each of the 43 children’s hospices across the UK & Ireland receive either a refurbishment of existing, or the building of new, facilities. Many other children across the UK are also proud owners of specialist equipment installed at home that the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity has helped to provide.

Wheelpower- who help in providing opportunities for disabled children to find a sport they enjoy.

Royal Manchester Children's Hospital- Treating patients from just days after birth through to their sixteenth birthday, they receive and treat young people with a vast range of illnesses and injuries.
